Hello, This is Floyd's older sister Jeanette. I was also in the "accident" and was injured. I would like to thank everyone for their condolences and I send my condolences to anyone who has lost a loved one to a drunk driver. We're going to be fighting against drunk driving so we need as many people to help us in this fight for Floyd Cheyenne Mack Jr. We need as many letters as we can possibly get so write them and send them to 1569 South Bragraw, Anchorage, Alaska,99508. If you'd like to see a wonderful picture of him go to www.thesunlink.com and either look for his name or the paper for July 5th, 2000. Thank you everyone for everything you have done or will do for us in the future!

Holiday Heartbreak
I just sat for many hours with a longtime friend over the post Thanksgiving and pre Christmas holidays of 2001. I saw our friends and many of his family members and in-laws I haven’t seen in years, and some I had never met. The Macks and Seyberts are Alaska native families which band together in times of joy and sorrow. We weren’t there to talk about how Floyd and I shared our first apartment as teens or how our kids were getting as old as we were when we first met. We were there to share in the loss of his 5 year old sons life, in what is an all to frequent recurring nightmare for thousands of American families every year. I cant call this loss an accident, an accident is when everything is being done right and something goes terribly wrong. Little Floyd is dead from the direct act of an individual who had previously been charged with Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) and was convicted and sentenced. Instead of doing his time in jail, he was able to get a pass from the halfway house where he was HOUSED and disappear until his path crossed over into the Mack/Seybert family.
In addition to the loss of his son, Floyd’s wife Linda and daughter Jeanette were also grievously injured (god bless the Samaritans who were able to pull them from the flaming wreckage). They will both spend many months and years healing the physical wounds and a lifetime healing the wounds to their souls, as will the witnesses to the carnage. The emergency crews that struggled to stabilize the family and the witnesses who pulled Linda and Jeanette to safety will share the nightmares of the friends and family. We have all seen the ads with the videos of kids during the holidays and then the killed by drunk driver clip, but when are we going to start treating this crime like the true heart breaker it is? Current state laws throughout the USA treat drunken driving like any other traffic violation. On Memorial weekend 1979 my mother became another Memorial Day drunk driver statistic. A habitual drunk driver crossed the lane into my mothers car and killed all the people in her car and 2 more people in his car, while he survived. Every time a person drinks to an excess and gets behind the wheel they take the chance of killing another family.
When someone is finally caught driving drunk,(rarely the first time they do it, or last) the court fines them several hundred dollars and a weekend or two at a local halfway house (which can be served at their convenience), unless of course they can afford an attorney that plea bargains the case down to reckless driving or some other traffic violation. Only a small number of drunk drivers are caught and cited and even fewer are convicted of that crime. If you fired a bullet into a crowd it would be attempted homicide, I see no clear difference from firing the gun and rocketing down the crowded highway in a 2 ton bullet. Is it only manslaughter when the victim couldn’t stop fast enough, or swerve far enough to get out of the DWI offenders way? Hundreds of accidents are averted yearly by the potential victims.
By blowing stoplights, speeding and crossing centerlines, drunk drivers may have hundreds of near misses before the big one. Many DWI offenders never come across someone that can’t get out of their way, but is there any less intent or criminality on the successful drunken trip home than when you wiped out an entire family? I guess in a country where you can admit to murder or child molestation and somehow be released to commit the same crime, anything is possible. We must begin treating drunken driving like the crime it truly is. Speak to your assembly representatives, write your senate, congress, judges and don’t forget the White House. Don’t wait until you are at your 2nd or 3rd funeral before it affects you too. Lets make the loss of Floyd ”mister” Mack jr. Lets stop the crime that is breaking Americas Heart.

I'm so very sorry for your loss. I lost my only child last year
on 9/21/00 to a drunk driver. Chelsey is her name and she had just turned
16 on 9/19/00. I know what lies ahead for you and I pray that you and your
family will be able to endure it. The pain gets a little easier, but not
much. Please email me anytime. God Bless
