As a Marine wife who went through Viet Nam I can understand the heartache being felt now and wish I could be there to hug all of them. Please remember the Marine motto SEMPER FI, and remember that while Brian may be gone he and all of you still have the Marines as well as your CDF family for help and to talk to if you need to. Take care and the best to all of you. As I have always heard form other Marines he is in the best of hands now he's served his time in the worst.

It is with great sadness that I must report that Sgt. Brian Dunlap was killed in Iraq on Sunday. The details of his death are still comming in. Brian was a firefighter I in San Diego and worked out of the Campo Fire Station after leaving the Marine Corps. Brian moved on last year to work full time for the Camp Pendleton Fire Dept. He hoped to use this as a stepping stone for a career with CDF. I liked to think of Brian was on loan to Camp Pendleton fire. But he was also a leader and always wanted to answer the call. Once a Marine always a Marine, Brian re-entered the service to fight in what he believed in. Before he deployed he asked me that if anything happened to him to take care of his mother and related issues. I was honored that he trusted me to handle the issue if it happened. But I would not allow myself to think about if that call ever came. When Brian deployed to Iraq the Marine Corps issued him a satelite phone were he called me almost every day. Always to let me know he was okay and telling me of tales of his day. With Brian being a EMT he often treated the injuries of his own men before medics would arrive. He volunteered to go on extra patrols on his off time "to look out for his men". He endured long hours, hot weather conditions and heavy combat. But what amazed me was he never complained. He always wanted to know how his CDF family was doing and if we had any fires yet. Even if you heard how tired he was in his voice it made him feel better knowing all of us were okay here at home. One of his happiest moments was when he called me to find out how he ranked on the supplemental list. He was proud of his ranking and could not wait to come home and to pursue his goalof becominga CDF employee again. I spoke with Brian by phone the morning of his death. He was so focused and told me how many months he had to go. Brian always ended the conversation with saying something funny or a line from a movie that only firefighters would watch, then he would follow up by telling me to say hello to members of his CDF family. The next day I received a call from the Marine Corps informing me that Brian was killed in action. Brian was my friend and I will always stand in awe of him. I am thankfull that Brian was apart of my family. Brian you are now protecting heaven. You taught me that evil is powerless if good me are not afraid. You were always a Hard Charger. Semper Fidelis my friend, K Zingheim
