I feel so lucky to call Chris a friend. He was an amazing guy and we all lost a great friend! I always wondered why he did so much, never stayed still, but know I now. He did more in his 23 years than most will do in 73. I just hope that one day I can do half of the things you did and gain the respect and love from everyone around me like you did. I miss you and Happy Birthday tomorrow. I'm sure there will be a huge party for you in Heaven!

To the Paul, Mary and Heather, Chris was my partner, friend, and brother. He was always there whenever you asked him for anything. If he couldn't do it, he knew someone that could. He is an exceptional man and I miss him dearly.
To Kathryn, I always ask about you. How you are doing? Is there anything that she needs? I'm sure it doesn't make it back to you, but if you ever need anything, or to talk call upon any of us here at Station 58.
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.
Chris...can't wait to see you again brother.

I would like to give my condolences to the Kanton family. He was a
great friend and partner. I had the honor of working with Chris at FFS 14. It
was our first season with CDF. And I would like to share a memory I have of
Chris... Chris was a hard worker and a great firefighter. He was the first to
his feet and the last to sit down. For example, I remember when we were on the
Pines fire together for 25 days straight, Chris would never rest, he kept on
working that the soles of his boots had melted, and even then he kept on
working. He had a lot of determination, I will never forget. Chris, you are
truely missed. Your brother and friend, Mark Montoya.

To Kathryn and the Kanton family, I extend my deepest condoloneces. I had the honor of working with Chris and Mike at 58 a few weeks before the accident. They treated me like a guest, they bought and cooked my dinner and would not let me do the dishes. I was impressed with Chris's energy level, he showed me his timeslip and had worked 27 out of 28 days the previous pay period. I did not know him as well as some but miss him quite a bit. The world is a better place because Chris lived a righteous life. Kathryn and Mr and Mrs Kanton if I there is anything I can do E-mail me and I will do what I can.

My heart goes out to the Kanton family and especially Kathryn. I didn't know Chris too well, but he was close with my girlfriend DeAnna. I have heard story and after story of his charm, good looks, and fun personality. I was able to work with Chris a little when I worked as a Paramedic on the ambulance that covered Heritage Ranch. Chris was ALWAYS the first one to meet me with patient information and it always started out as "Hey Ross, how are you doing? Been out on the lake lately?" He genuinely cared for the people he was around and it was evident in his speech and actions. He always had a smile on his face and I'll never forget it! Chris, you will be sorely missed and I expect the same old greeting from you when I see you again on the other side. Rest in Peace brother ...and on behalf of the rest of Paso Robles City Fire, our deepest thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

To the Kanton family. My heart goes out to all of you in your time of grieving. Chris was a wonderful, caring, and great person in general. He was an exceptional firfighter and teacher. He taught us all in Fire Explorers at station 58 to trust one another and that the Fire Department is a family. Chris was one of our brothers as soon as he set foot at Station 58. We all learned so much from him and will continue to remember him. I will never forget the red board shorts he used to wear while around the house and the strawberries and cream conditioner he used. I will keep you in my prayers and hope that you know that all the Fire Explorers at Station 58 will be keeping you in our hearts and minds.

To the Kanton Family: We did not know Chris directly except through our daughter, an Explorer at Station 58 in Moreno Valley, who had many stories to tell about Chris' humor, charm, smile, good looks, and personality. Attending the memorial and listening to what a genuinely good person he was, and seeing how his death has affected so many, makes us realize that as long as we have people like Chris to grace our lives and to set an example for us, we can keep him alive in all that we do. If we follow his example-think of others, have fun, help our fellow human being-the world will be a better place. We will miss you, Chris. Know that Chris is in Jesus' loving arms and trust that someday, you will meet again in heaven. God Bless you all.

To the Kanton Family, Chris lived a dream, He lived a dream that many of us share, To have the honor, the duty, the passion, the willingness, the courage, and the love for the job he performed. He walked proudly as a man, as a hero, and a loving family man. Chris not only did a job, he lived a lifestyle, A lifestyle that everyone can be proud of!! Although the pain will never go away the pride will always remain!! May you have peace of mind knowing that Chris lived the life that he loved. I was one of the fortunate one's to have worked with Chris in San Luis Obispo, he will never be Forgotten!! God Bless you Kathryn and the rest of the Kanton Family

Anyone who knew Chris knew of his dedication; to work, to friends, and to family. Chris was never a person who did anything half way. Chris loved life, and I can’t remember him ever harboring a negative attitude. He touched the lives of everyone he met through his energy and charm. Everyone he met became an instant friend.
I grew up near Chris in Heritage Ranch, and was fortunate enough to become close personal friends with him the last 5 years. Chris was a great friend who taught me much about life. He taught me things like how to ride 50s in the dark, how to jump off buildings and run up the sides of them, hot to pop wheelies, how to build bonfires, and that if you tried hard enough Vegas is really only a 4 and a half hour drive from Paso. More importantly, by Chris’ example he taught me how to be a good listener. He taught me that a good friend can still be there for you even if they’re far away. He taught me to be adventurous and to love life. He taught me that you can find something to laugh at in every situation, and to never take life too seriously. By meeting Chris, I learned that great friends really can be made in a moment.
Chris is already greatly missed and will forever be in the hearts of those who knew him. My prayers are with his parents, sister, extended family, his new wife Kathryn, and his brothers in the fire department that were with him in the accident. May God be with you, and keep Chris alive in the hearts of all who knew him.

I was in tears the minute I read the announcement and while I do not know Chris personnally it brings me great sorrow to see someone so young hit with something so tragic. I don't know that there is any immediate comfort after such a loss but perhaps there is some hope in knowing that he was living the life he wanted to live and reaching forward toward his dreams. My prayers go out to his wife, all of his family, and friends--may God grant you peace.

Dear Chris's family,
I worked with Chris on HazMat sporadically. I knew him, better than some, not as well as most. I don't need to tell you what kind of man Chris was, nor can I write any words that could assuage your grief. I only hope that through your tears you were able to see how large Chris's family really is. Unfortunately, I have been to several firefighter memorials. Occasionally firefighters will attend and show there respect even if they did not know their fallen brother or sister personally. This was not the case for Chris. Every CDF uniform at Chris's service seemed to know him and had some story to tell about him. I don't know that I have ever known someone who has touched so many lives so positively in so short a time. Chris was our brother and he always will be, and I hope you know that you are part of our CDF family forever.
Very truly yours,
One of your CDF brothers.

I was not able to attend the memorial service today but would like to pass on this poem to Kathryn and the Kanton family. I'm so sorry for your loss. "Death is nothing at all, I have only slipped away to the next room, I am I and you are you, Whatever we were to each other, That, we still are, Call me by my old familiar name, Speak to me in the easy way which you always used, Put no difference into your tone, Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow, Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together, Play, smile, think of me, Pray for me, Let my name be ever the household word that it always was, Let it be spoken without effect, Without the trace of a shadow on it, Life means all that it ever meant, It is the same that it ever was, There is absolute unbroken continuity, Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am but waiting for you, For an interval, Somewhere, Very near, Just around the corner, All is well." Written by Henry Scott Holland.

It is amazing that the life of one exceptional young man can have such an effect on so many people. I had the privilege of meeting Chris only two times. His confidence and optimism were the things that I remember most about Chris.
Chris and I were acquaintances who shared some common interests. We sometimes chatted about his plans to work on his house and yard. He had many ambitions in that regard. I was struck by the fact that Chris had many talents and interests, but Chris a firefighter, through and through. This was not just his job, this was who he was. I wish my calling was as clear to me as Chris’s was to him.
I was looking forward to getting to know Chris better. He will be missed tremendously in Temecula, Ca.

To the Family and Friends of Chris. Although I can't say that I ever met Chris, I can say that I feel for his family, friends and coworkers. I know what it is like to loose a coworker, and close friends in the fire service. Know that Chris was doing what many have only dreamed of and every little boy wishes to one day do. Chris served the Citizens of California and risked his life on a daily basis. From the Crew of McCloud FFS and myself, it is sad to say that we lost a brother, but we gained a friend in heaven. You always made everyone in your presence feel like family. You wore your heart made of gold proudly upon your sleeve. Some people give the shirts off their back, you gave your life. The word hero, can not even begin to describe the type of person you were and always will be, in our thoughts and in our hearts. The world would be a better place with more people like you in it. We were truly blessed to have known you. You will never be forgotten. To Kathryn and the Kanton family, know that you will always be in our thoughts and prayers. All of here at Sta. 69 knew Chris, some better than others. But as we reminisced, there was always common themes to the stories: That Chris was a good friend, a good firefighter, and most importantly, a great person. We are saddened by his loss. There are no words that can provide comfort because of your loss. These words sum up what a firefighter is, as a caring and dedicated member of our community.
TO BE A FIREMAN
"I HAVE NO AMBITION IN
THIS WORLD BUT ONE, AND
THAT IS TO BE A FIREMAN. THE POSITION MAY, IN
THE EYES OF SOME, APPEAR
TO BE A LOWLY ONE; BUT THOSE WHO KNOW THE
WORK WHICH A FIREMAN
HAS TO DO BELIEVE
HIS IS A NOBEL CALLING.
OUR PROUDEST MOMENT
IS TO SAVE... LIVES.
UNDER THE IMPULSE
OF SUCH THOUGHTS
THE NOBILITY OF THE
OCCUPATION THRILLS US
AND STIMULATES US TO
DEEDS OF DARING,
EVEN OF
SUPREME SACRIFICE."

My heart felt condolences go out to Chris Kantons family. You are in my prayers and I feel for our loss together. I pray that God will comfort you and help you through this difficult time of loss. I also pray that Chris had the opportunity to get to know God Himself. This is a perfect example of how fleeting our lives are, and at anytime God can call us home. The only hope and comfort that we can receive from this is the fact that Chris is in a better place, and that one day we will be able to meet again. While Chris was here he worked the gift that God has given all of us in this profession. In heaven he will be recognized and rewarded for the deeds which he has done. Once again you are in my prayers. God Bless.
