"Another young Hero has joined the ranks of Angels"

A thank you for your life seems so small. To the family & friends, I feel for your loss. From what I have read, Eva was quite a special woman. May you remember her as the sunshine that warms you every day.

I can remember hearing the bombers leaving the Columbia airport from my mother-in-laws mobile home adjacent to the Columbia airport in the 1970's. Today, I listen to the air dispatch guys on my Ham radio. You firefighter guys are an awesome family and thanks for all you do for those of us in "fire country." God Bless Eva's family and thanks for your sacrifice.

My deepest sympathy goes out to the family and friends of Eva. I have the greatest respect for our firefighters and also their family. My name is Sharon and I'm an undergrad student at Cal State University San Bernardino. I am very intrigued by the Fire Services and am currently conducting a research study about the death of Eva Schicke and how CDF handled the crisis. It would greatly benefit me if you could please contact me at sharoncdizon@yahoo.com by March 14, 2005 and let me know: 1. How do you feel about CDF? 2. Do you feel that CDF handled the Eva Schicke crisis well? 3. Please explain your answer. 4. Has your perspective about CDF changed after her death? 5. Please explain your answer. 6. During a media conference, CDF Director Dale Geldert expressed grief as he began to cry and could not finish his statement. How did his display of emotions affect you? (If you were unable to view this conference, you may view it at http://www.thekcrachannel.com/video/3726755/detail.html). 7. Do you think this incident will cause a decline in females pursuing a career as a firefighter? 8.Is there anything you would change about how CDF handled the Eva Schicke incident? THANK YOU SO MUCH AND MY HEART GOES OUT TO EVA SCHICKE AND OTHER FALLEN FIREFIGHTERS. GOD BLESS OUR FIREFIGHTERS

EVA AND I HAVE KNOWN EACHOTHER SINCE WE WERE 10 YEARS OLD. SHE WAS THE FIRST TRUE BEST-FRIEND I HAD WHEN I MOVED TO PLACERVILLE. WE SOON BECAME INSEPARABLE DURING JUNIOR HIGH AND WE SPENT EVERY DAY TOGETHER DURING THE SUMMERS. SHE WAS THE SWEETEST AND MOST CARING PERSON AND SHE SHOWED ME TO LOVE GOD PROUDLY. WE ATTENDING CALVARY CHAPEL CHURCH AND LOVED GOING TO CAMPS TOGETHER. SHE AND I REMAINED FRIENDS THOUGHOUT HIGH SCHOOL EVENTHOUGH WE DID NOT SPEND A LOT OF TIME TOGETHER, WE ALWAYS STAYED IN CONTACT. AFTER H.S. IN 2000 WHEN SHE JOINED CDF, I WAS SO INTERESTED THAT I JOINED THE FOLLOWING YEAR. SHE WAS ALWAYS A BETTER FIREFIGHTER THAN ME, BUT WE LOVED TO TALK ABOUT OUR ADVENTURES. I LOVE HER DEARLY AND MY LAST TRIBUTE TO HER WAS TO BE ABLE TO GO TO HER FUNERAL AND PAY MY LAST RESPECTS. I MISS HER SO MUCH, AND I WILL ALWAYS REGRET NOT DOING MORE TO STAY CLOSE WITH HER SINCE I MOVED TO GEORGIA WITH MY HUSBAND IN 2003. EVA I LOVE YOU AND I MISS YOU WITH ALL MY HEART!!! FOR JOYCE & JOHN: HANG IN THERE AND I LOVE YOU BOTH, GOD BLESS YOU FOR ALL YOUR COURAGE AND STRENGTH FOR EVERYTHING YOU'VE BEEN THROUGH!!!

To the family of Eva Schicke...Only 24 years old...how very sad. Please accept my deepest sympathy. My son, a firefighter and EMT was laid to rest at 33 years of age. What helped me was a booklet "When a Loved One Dies" and one of the sections entitled 'How Can I Live with My Grief' was a great comfort. I would like to share it with you-there isn't any charge. I found Jesus wept when he heard his close friend Lazurus died. However, when he reached his hometown he resurrected Lazurus from death (John chapter 11) also made a promise in John 5:28,29 that at a future time he will resurrect all those in their memorial tombs-an assured hope we will see our loved ones again. Take care of yourselves and take comfort from God's Word. Rev 21:3-5

To Joyce, John, and Shea -- you are in my thoughts and prayers every day since our precious Eva went to be with our Lord. I pray He will comfort each of you as only He can and give you grace sufficient for each step on this excruciatingly painful road in the "valley of the shadow." I think of Eva every time I see a CDF Vehicle, hear a siren, or see a sunset. Her light still shines brightly, and always will.

I knew Eva through her brother John. Eva and her brother John seemed to be closer than most siblings. Although I never met her, I did get to talk to her on John's phone a couple of times when it was his turn to throw darts. Although I didn't get to speak to her long, because John was chasing me through the garage...the front lawn...and into the street in front of "Big John’s" trying to get his phone back (good times)...She seemed to be a VERY cheerful, and sweet girl. As I read the other posts, I see what a tremendous impact that Eva had on everyone that she came into contact with. I wish I could have know her better. She will be missed dearly. My most sincere condolences to John, her mother Joyce, and Fiancé Shea.

Although we never had the opportunity to meet Eva we feel the loss deep in our hearts..........you see without even knowing her we can tell a few things about her.....she was selfless, willing to leave her family 4 days a week in order to protect your family and ours. In doing that she made the ultimate sacrifice and her loss will be felt for years and years to come. Her profession was a noble and dangerous profession, it was one of great risks but of even greater rewards........not monetary or materialistic rewards, but rewards in satisfaction, pride and respect. Eva was called upon by our lord to carry on these tasks on a much bigger scale, a scale that only those with faith can comprehend. Godspeed Eva, and carry on with a job well done.

Eva seemed to be a good firefighter and Christian woman just starting out in life. I know as a Christian and a CDF Firefighter for 7 fire seasons Eva is in a better place and that's with the Lord. We don't know why the fire changed so fast but I am sure Eva did everything right being on the dept. for 4 1/2 years and being on helitack. The song touched me that Eva & her mom sang, "this is our daily bread". I want to send my sincere apologies to Eva's parents and family & friends and even co-workers. I pray for you several times a day everyday. I didnt know Eva but the story of her accident on the fire really got to me. I have Post traumatic stress disorder from a burn victim that happened on the fire dept. and I really feel for everyone that was involved in her life. I pray for you all and just know that she is with God now and we will all reunite again someday with Eva.

Joyce, John, and Shea have lost one of the best young ladies I have ever known. Eva touched the lives of our entire family. I had the great pleasure to be her college basketball coach, my husband was her CDF Battalion Chief in Arnold, she was a "big sister" and babysitter for our children. She was "first-class" and a "team player" in every aspect of her life. To her teammates at CSU, Stanislaus she was the leader everyone looked up to. She was respected by her fellow firefighters as a tough, hard working, and determined individual. She will be missed by all who knew her but never forgotten.

I have heard it said that, "It is not all the years in your life but the life in your years". I am certain when I say that Eva lived every day of every year of her life to the absolute fullest. I am sad to say that I myself was not a personal friend of Miss Eva Marie Schicke, I did know her and by simply meeting her I knew that without a doubt I liked her, there was nothing not to like. I do know many people who were very close to her and I have seen the reactions of those people to the passing of this young and beautiful woman. I am sad for her fiance Shaye, who lost a great love. I am sorry for her brother John, who lost a sister who also happen to be a great friend. And I am sorry for her mother, who has felt more loss than anyone should ever feel. I never thought it was possible to see the physical effects of a broken heart, and then I looked at the face of Mrs. Schicke as she clutched her daughters fight helmet. I can't say anything about Eva that has not already been said, she was wonderful and we were all blessed for the times we shared with her.No matter how long or how short those times may have been, we are all a little bit better for having known her.

My husband worked with Eva on fires and he had a lot of respect for her. I lost my father in February and this following poem helped me to get through my loss. I hope it helps you as well. Gone From My Sight by Henry Van Dyke I am standing upon the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength. I stand and watch her until at length she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other. Then someone at my side says:"There, she is gone!" "Gone where?" Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side and she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port. Her diminished size is in me, not her. And just at the moment when someone at my side says: "There, she is gone!" there are other voices ready to take up the glad shout: "Here she comes!" And that is dying. God bless!!

To the family, friends and co-workers of Eva I send my prayers in your time of sorrow. What a tremendous loss you have all suffered. Eva has left behind a legacy that will not soon be forgotten. There will always be that space that only she could fill. I know that she will never leave your thoughts or your hearts. I am sure that when she stepped from this world to eternity she held all of you in her heart. My son attended Eva's service yesterday, he is a firefighter and knew Eva. He was telling me about the helicopter taking her home. He said what ever apparatus takes you to the fire is supposed to take you home. God sent Eva into this world almost 24 years ago and now he has taken her home. I keep thinking about the Firefighters Prayer and the last part that says: And if according to your will I have to give my life. Please bless with your protecting hand My Family and My Friends. My love and my prayers to those left behind.

I sat here today in tears because I miss my daughter and her family who are 3000 miles away. As I sat here feeling sorry for myself, I read about the tragic death of Eva. I will see my daughter soon and will be able to hold her, but for you that will never happen, and the thought of that took my breath away. Sometimes we take things for granted and just don't realize how lucky we really are. Instead of crying for something we don't have we should count our blessings for what we do have. As a mother of a daughter Eva's age, I was ashamed that I allowed my self to sit here feeling sorry for myself when another mother has to deal with such pain. I cannot pretend to imagine the sadness and pain that you have to endure. I wish there was something I could say or do to lessen the pain, but I know that isn't possible. Know that your daughter was loved and very much admired by everyone that knew her and worked with her. She left a void that can never be filled, but a mark that will never be forgotten. Though there will always be tears and a pain in your heart, you can stand proud of what a wonderful, loving, caring and beautiful woman Eva was and will always remain, if only in our hearts and memories. Eva and your family will remain in my prayers. God Bless and may your memories help to ease the loss in some little way.

I sat here today in tears because I miss my daughter and her family who are 3000 miles away. As I sat here feeling sorry for myself, I read about the tragic death of Eva. To Eva's loved ones: I am truly sorry for your loss and your pain. My 21-yr. old son is in his 1st season with CDF. He knew Eva only slightly but now he will never forget her. I cannot begin to imagine the depth of your sadness, but I realize your loss is great. I know you must be proud of all she accomplished in her life and how she put everything on the line for others. I know that you would rather she be here than gone from you. I know that her life was too high a price to pay for her job but she believed otherwise. I know that she was honored by everyone yesterday and I hope that comforts you now. Tomorrow, when others get on with their days, and you are missing her, know that she is honored still for being your child, your loved one, your pride and joy. Know that she symbolizes the possibility of our own and we will forever hold her and you close and in our prayers. Paul Cole's (Altaville CDF)mom

It is very hard to find the words to offer those that have experienced the loss of a loved one, especially one so young. Your daughter and friend is in my prayers and my heart goes out you. I did not know Eva but as one that works with firefighters and the mother of a young lady who has chosen and loves firefighting, this is the type of news that I fear the most. May God Bless you and ease your sorrow.

If tomorrow starts without me, And I'm not there to see, If the sun should rise and find your eyes all filled with tears for me; I wish so much you wouldn't cry the way you did today, While thinking of the many things, we didn't get to say. I know how much you love me, As much as I love you! , And each time that you think of me, I know you'll miss me too; But when tomorrow starts without me, Please try to understand, That an angel came and called my name, And took me by the hand, And said my place was ready, In heaven far above, And that I'd have to leave behind; All those I dearly love. But as I turned to walk away, A tear fell from my eye For all my life, I'd always thought, I didn't want to die. I had so much to live for, So much left yet to do, It seemed almost impossible, That I was leaving you. I thought of all the yesterdays, The good ones and the bad, I thought of all the love we shared, And all the fun we had. If I could relive yesterday, Just even for a while, I'd say good-bye and kiss you, And maybe see you smile. But then I fully realized, That this could never be, For emptiness and memories, Would take the place of me. And when I thought of worldly things, I might miss come tomorrow, I thought of you, and when I did, My heart was filled with sorrow. But when I walked through heaven's gates, I felt so much at home. When God looked down and smiled at me, From His great golden throne, He said, "This is eternity, And all I've promised you." Today your life on earth is past, But here life starts anew. I promise no tomorrow, But today will always last, And since each day's the same way, There's no longing for the past. You have been so faithful, So trusting and so true. Though there were times you did some things, you knew you shouldn't do. But you have been forgiven, and now at last you're free. So won't you come and take my hand, and share my life with me? So when tomorrow starts without me, don't think we're far apart, For every time you think of me, I'm right here, in your heart.

To Eva's family and the firefighting family: Whenever a firefighter dies in the line of duty, no matter where, the tragedy is deeply felt by the firefighting community everywhere. And this senseless tragedy is compounded by the fact that in all likelihood, this was a case of arson, a stupid, moronic act that took the life of a beautiful, dedicated and spirited young woman and caused serious injuries to others. On behalf of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources forest fire management staff, please accept our deepest sympathy. We share your pain.

To the family of Eva, Although I only meet Eva once, I admired her from that day until her last. The day of the fire, we were battling the Old Hy fire in MMU and heard of our great loss at 2100. Since then sleep has been hard, and knowing that that could have been any of us on any given day makes it so much worse. I feel greatly for your friends, family, and fellow crewmates. Today we face the challenges of life and the responsibilities of our profession with heaviness in our hearts at the sudden loss of one of our own. I worked for CDF as a seasonal firefighter before going into the military in 1968. Now-as a dispatcher at the Federal Interagency Communications Center in San Bernardino, I continue to work along side of and have friends on the Department. I have seen the evolvement and progression of CDF from a “Division” to a “Department” and I attribute the level of expertise within the CDF to those with the likeness of Eva. We feel your pain, we feel your sorrow, and we feel your loss as ours. God speed Eva and may God watch over and provide guidance to all those that you have so graciously touched.

The homeless people of America mourn the loss of a great and productive citizen. There is not one of us who wouldn't have taken her place; if we were allowed to serve our country we would gladly give our all against the enemy in whatever form it takes. Unfortunatly we are fighting our own silent enemy and in our daily battle have lost the opportunity to be all we could have been for God and our country. Thank you Eva for being all we never could. We are praying for you and your family and maybe someday one of us will be able to make the ultimate sacrifice as you so bravely did. Until then, we THANK YOU EVA~~~From all the homeless that care~~~

I had the pleasure of making Eva's aquaintence during her first year at CSU Stanislaus. Like so many of those that have known her, I too found her energy and competitiveness to be two of her most memorable qualities. She has a spirit that will never be forgotten and I will remember her for her, "Can Do" attitude. I remember playing in those "Sand-lot" football games and watching in amazement as she would tackle guys almost twice her size, head-up and then jump up and run to the huddle without missing a beat. (quite amusing when sometimes they didn't) It makes me smile recalling the memory of her toughness and competitiveness. She was truly an incredible person and is missed by many. It is truly a small world when so many people have had their lives touched by one person. I am thankful that I was granted the opportunity to have known such a wonderful person in Eva and though it's been a few years, I am saddened by the loss. My deepest sympathies go out to her mother, brother, family and her breathren at the CDF.

Family and Friends, The day a read about Eva in our paper, I said to some friends, I am so fortuante that my son is not at that fire. Around an hour after I said that, I received a call from my son telling me that he was on his way up to Stansilaus to help fight the fire. He told me about the death as I told him that I had just read all about it. My son then said "mom, I will be ok, please don't worry about me", but as a mother all I could do was remember the article I had just read about a young girls life just being taken and I said to my son, be careful, be alert, and son always remember how very much I love you. My son and I were never bleassed by knowing Eva, yet we are deeply saddened and feel sorrow for Eva and her family and friends that she leaves behind. In our eyes she was and is a hero. Our prayers will continue to be with all of you. I have not heard from my son now for the last 4 days. I read that the fire is 90% contained so I am hoping to hear from him soon, and I am hoping to hold him and tell him how very proud I am of him for what he is doing as a firefighter, not a day goes by that I do not worry about his safety. He loves it as it sounds like Eva loved it too. Family and friends I am deeply sorry and I will always consider Eva the young firefighter, "a hero" in a class of her own. May God bless you and give you the strenght you need and may Eva rest in peace. Sincerely, Liz Maring

I have not seen Eva for a long time. I am deeply sorry that she would come into my thoughts by this tragedy. I offer my prayers and sympathy to her family. May God give them strength and comfort. Eva was a great person in life and from what I hear, she was great to the last minute. I used to watch her play basketball and she was an animal. My favorite memory of Eva was when I got into boxing and she wanted to fight me. She was pretty much one of the guys so one day we got the gloves on and threw down for about half an hour. She was a beast. She cut my lip. I'm not the best boxer but she is the only person to ever do that. When we finished, we hugged and laughed about it for weeks. That was the type of girl she was. My deepest condolences to Eva's family. She will be missed. Eva, wherever you are, you are a hero. I wish we could have you back.

As the mother of a fire fighter and as an ER RN myself this hits especially close to home. My son had the pleasure of knowing Eva. I have always appreciated the special spirit I find in our firefighters. I truly believe that God reclaims those very special and rare young people to be with Him in heaven at our expense. I know those left behind will be all the more motivated to rise to Eva's example or energy and committment, while acknowledging the fraility of life, and appreciating each day with those they love. My most sincere condolences for your loss and all of the rest of us who did not have the pleasure of getting to know her. Sue Griffith, RN

My deepest sympathy for the loss of Eva. People who work and risk their lives in wildland firefighting and in natural resource management are always close to my heart. Such difficult and often dangerous jobs, with very little recognition. I for one cry long and hard every time we lose one of the family, and Eva's loss is a particularly hard one, because of her ambition to become a nurse, something my sister did for nearly 40 years. From a retired forester, who spent my last 18 years on the Bridgeport RD, Toiyabe NF, and the Mammoth RD, Inyo NF and was on the Stanislaus Complex in 1987, who somehow survived four fatal near misses in my career. The whole firefighting family is grieving for her now.

To our dearest sister, Joyce; and to our brother, John, words cannot express the grief we are experiencing but in our hearts we know that Eva Marie was chosen by God long ago. She was always a child of God and now she sits at the feet of Jesus. One day we too will be with her; but for now we must hold each other up daily in prayer for we do not know the number of our days. My deepest sympathy to Eva's family, friends and coworkers at this difficult time. From what I have read of Eva, she was truly a special person, completely dedicated to her work as a firefighter. Though I did not know Eva personally, I feel a very strong connection to her in that I was in the area where she and her fellow firefighters were overcome by the burnover that took her life. We happened to be camping at Camp Mather last weekend, a short distance from where the fire broke out. When we smelled the smoke, we all knew a fire was burning nearby. When we heard how very close it was, we packed up our gear and got on the road. When we came down 120, we stopped at an overlook and saw the fire. We all felt such sadness. It is a terrible thing to see. Then to learn a firefighter was lost...words cannot describe our feelings. Eva gave her life to protect us and for that we will be eternally grateful. So we say God bless you, Eva, and thank you. You will always be remembered.

Dear Family, Friends, & Co-workers of Eva Schicke, Every time I think of you, this is what I pray; That God will give you strength and love to last throughout the day. I know that "Jesus' love" is faithful and true, and He alone knows what you are going through. He'll give you strength when you feel weak; and in your ear He will softly speak. Just call on His name; He's always there; let Him know what you're feeling; He really does care. When you feel afraid and don't know what to do, just say The Name "Jesus" He's there for you. May you feel "His Love and Peace" today, as you trust in Him to guide your way. With My Heartfelt Love & Prayers, Patricia ...And the peace of God which passeth all understanding, shall strengthen your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:7 KJ)

Words will ease the pain you feel but you are not alone. The family of firefighters both CDF and other all cry with you. I am alive today due to the heroic actions of CDF Captain Knapp-Smith in 1980. He died saving not only my life but that of my two firefighters. CDF is life one chooses to be part of. Your daughter was one of us, sharing both the love and danger of the job. From the gates of Heaven the IC of all creation stands with a watchful gaze. The Operations Angel has organized this new crew and gives the order,"Tool-up We're Going In". Eva leads the way with pride knowing she has spent her time in hell and put it out. She has now been promoted to her new job of "Watchful Angel" to look over all those she has left behind. For the firefighters she will be that little voice that shouts "Watch Out" when things are not right. Heaven's Brigade has just added a CDF'er to the ranks and one whom had her wings before she arrived.

My prayers are with Eva Schicke’s family, friends and co-workers. The grief and pain felt by the emergency response men and women who worked side-by-side with Eva experience a grief that few truly understand. A line of duty death impacts the fire fighting extended family to its very core. Eva has touched many lives and in her living and dying, she has shared her gifts and talents and taught us to value life. Focus on the positive aspects of her life. Take these memories and become a more warm, loving, and caring person. By reinvesting in life and sharing love with others, you will honor this young hero who made the ultimate sacrifice. In so doing, Eva will never be forgotten.
